With the 2014 FIFA World Cup well underway, it's safe to say soccer fans across the globe are in their element. Tuning in to see the highs and lows of each match is whipping up a frenzy of excitement – and this may even extend to holiday intentions as well.
It's no secret that Latin America is well known for its soccer legends, while other countries such as Germany also have an esteemed history of sporting success in this field. Whether directly related to this fact or not, new research shows soccer fans are more likely to want to visit these regions than other travellers.
According to the latest from Roy Morgan Research, a total of 3,494,000 Australians are currently keeping up with all the action at the World Cup through their TV. Perhaps not surprisingly, World Cup viewers are also 62 per cent more likely than the average Australian to choose Mexico, Central and South America as their ideal holiday destination.
In addition to this, people who play soccer themselves are 65 per cent more likely to pick these destinations for their preferred holiday. When it comes to Germany, soccer players are 117 per cent more likely and Australian World Cup viewers are 70 per cent more likely to want to visit the country than the average Australian.
Soccer players who also watch the World Cup were dubbed 'super-fans' by Roy Morgan Research, and are 86 per cent more likely to choose Mexico, Central and South America as a holiday destination. They were also 133 per cent more likely to pick Spain or Portugal and 177 per cent more likely to prefer a trip to Germany.
Whether or not you're a soccer fan yourself, there are several things you'll need to arrange before travelling to any overseas destination.
Travel insurance is an essential part of the journey, as you never know what may happen on your trip.
