As smartphones become increasingly central to everyday life, it's no surprise that many travellers won't leave home without their mobile device. A new report published by MasterCard shows travellers are making the most of this technology while on holiday, with many willing to share personal data for services they see as useful to their trip.
According to the research, one of the greatest fears travellers have is the possibility of missing a crucial flight, train or connection. In light of this finding, it's not hard to see why many travellers are interested in services that can target this problem and make the experience easier.
For example, 67 per cent of South Koreans say they would share their data for a service that chooses the quickest routes for them, followed by 50 per cent of Brazilian travellers, 47 per cent of US travellers, 46 per cent of Swedish travellers and 40 per cent of travellers from the UK.
A significant amount of people from these countries also said they would be willing to share data for a service recommending the best time of day to travel, with South Korea again leading the way with 58 per cent of respondents saying they would be interested.
This was followed by Brazil (52 per cent), the UK (51 per cent), the US (49 per cent) and Sweden (46 per cent).
These figures may be surprising, given the fact that many people are more aware of the potential dangers involved in making private details more available through technology. However, it's clear that many people would be willing to trade some personal information for the advantage of useful services. While these automated mobility services aren't yet a reality for many people, the report indicates they have an enthusiastic audience waiting.
"The future is one in which travelers make their own data, preferences work for them and they are increasingly happy to (at the very least) try automated mobility services," the report states.
If you're planning an overseas trip of your own in the next few years, it could pay to look into the types of automated travel services available at your destination. Along with essential travel health insurance, they could make your trip easier by saving you a significant amount of stress, effort and time.
