The Private Health Insurance Ombudsman has released a list of ten tips to help you avoid common problems with your health insurance provider and policy. Here is part two.
6. Know your limit
Some private health insurance providers place a limit on the claims you can make, particularly in fields such as dental or optical services.
It is important to ask your fund for details on the limits they apply, to ensure you are not surprised by a claims refusal or change to your policy once the limit has been met.
7. Submit claims promptly
The safest way to ensure your medical bills are paid on time is to make any claims as soon as possible after receiving treatment.
Most providers will not cover any claims made two years after the service was provided. If your policy has a similar limit but an unforeseen circumstance is likely to prevent you making the claim on time, contact your fund as soon as you can.
8. Write down advice
If you need to contact your insurance provider by phone, make a written note of any advice you believe will be helpful to you.
You can also ask your provider to supply any advice in writing, if possible. Just ensure that all written records have a date of reference to make it easier to use in the future.
9. Review your policy regularly
If your personal circumstances change, it is important to review your health insurance to ensure the cover still suits your situation and health needs.
Health insurance providers can also regularly change the benefits they pay or premiums they may charge, so it is worth checking your policy at least once a year and comparing it with other insurance funds in the market.
10. Do research before changing plans
You may believe the best option for your changing situation will be to change policy or provider. If so, it is recommended you do plenty of research first.
If the new policy or private health cover has lower excess than your current plan, you may have to to serve a waiting period before you are able to receive benefits.
