When it comes to maintaining one's health, many Australians have a different opinion as to what's best to nurture a healthy body. Whether your approach is to eat super foods with every meal, you rely on a brisk walk every evening, or practice plain old traditional medicine, what works varies according to who you're talking to.
Homeopathy is one medical approach that Australians have the option of taking. This healthcare method follows the belief that 'like cures like', and can be used alongside more traditional methods of healthcare for chronic illness, acute conditions and minor first aid, according to the Australian Homeopathic Association.
However, those that rely on this alternative form of treatment in alleviating their health conditions may be shocked at a new report released by the National Health and Medicine Research Council (NHMRC), which concludes there "is no reliable evidence that homeopathy is effective for treating health conditions".
The report, entitled the 'NHMRC Draft Information Paper on the Evidence on Homeopathy', was released on April 9, and is an intensive examination of existing available research on the effectiveness of homeopathy for treating 68 health conditions.
Chief Executive Officer of NHMRC, Professor Warwick Anderson, stated that public consultation on the draft was important, and recognised this form of healthcare has a strong following in Australia.
"NHMRC is acutely aware of strongly held views on the effectiveness of homeopathy, which is why this Draft Information Paper is available for public comment until 26 May 2014", Professor Anderson stated in an April 9 media release.
It's important to note the findings of the paper state that there is a lack of evidence to determine whether or not homeopathy is effective, and the conclusion is not set in stone just yet. Thus, the paper also did not manage to find any real proof that this form of treatment does not work.
Despite differing opinions surrounding this health treatment, one thing we can all agree on is the fact that health is unpredictable. Even if you lead the 'healthiest' of lifestyles, there's no guarantee you will always experience perfect health as a result.
For this reason, it's important Australians invest in health insurance no matter what your beliefs and opinions on what's best when it comes to healthcare. By all means, homeopathy and other alternative treatments may work for you – but what always works for Australians is health insurance.
