A report from Medibank Private has revealed the most common reasons behind Australian private hospital admissions. The results have shed light on private health insurance usage around the country.
Released on March 11, the report found that while childbirth remains the most frequent cause of overnight stays / admissions, the number of patients seeking joint replacements is quickly gaining ground.
Between 2010 and June 2013, there was a 34 per cent increase in the number of admissions related to rehabilitation, along with a 107 per cent rise in the amount of patients accessing same-day rehabilitation services. Medibank Private has attributed this growth to the climbing admissions for knee replacements and hip replacements – up 15 per cent and 12 per cent, respectively, over the same period.
"Many of the procedures for which we are seeing increased admissions are so-called 'elective' surgery, but I'm sure for many waiting to have a knee or hip replacement they wouldn't share that sentiment," Medibank Executive General Manager – Private Health Insurance Laz Cotsios explained in the March 11 media release.
Half of the patients requiring these procedures will wait more than six months for surgery in the public health system, while 12 per cent of patients suffer delays for more than a year.
Comparatively, individuals who hold comprehensive private health insurance are often able to bypass the public waiting lists. They receive their surgery much faster and can resume their pre-injury lives sooner than those stuck in the public health system.
Ultimately, the report has reinforced the value of Australian health insurance. In addition to quicker admission and treatment, patients will incur relatively low out-of-pocket expenses when they hold sufficient private health cover.
"Not only are patients receiving good financial value for their premium but they can get on with their lives – something we all value," Mr Cotsios concluded.
