The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) announced today that more Australians than ever before are benefiting from mental health services.
In particular, there has been a significant rise in the number of people benefiting from mental health services subsidised by Medicare.
So, if you were wondering whether your Medicare Levy payments were being put to good use, you can rest assured that they are!
The MLS is calculated at the rate of 1 per cent to 1.5 per cent of your annual income. It is paid by most Australian taxpayers in addition to the Medicare Levy of 1.5 per cent.
More than 1.6 million people across Australia received 7.9 million mental health services subsidised by Medicare in 2011-12, according to AIHW's Mental Health Services in Australia website.
In addition to this, the rate of Australians being hospitalised for mental health issues rose. AIHW statistics reveal that 2010-11 saw over 220,000 cases being admitted to hospitals.
If you or a member of your family ever requires hospitalisation for a mental health issue, or for any other reason, having a family health insurance plan could allow you to be treated in a private hospital or as a private patient in a public hospital.
