On August 22, the coalition government released its health policy.
While Ian Yates, chief executive officer of COTA Australia, agrees with many of the suggestions made in the policy, he thinks it is lacking in some areas.
For instance, he says the policy "does not go far enough" when it comes to the affordability of health care, particularly for older Australians.
"We've recently asked older Australians across the nation what matters to them this election and access to quality and affordable health services is their number one priority," said Mr Yates in an August 22 statement.
He added that out-of-pocket costs – that is, costs for health care that aren't covered by a health insurance policy – are on the rise. This means many older Australians are having a hard time affording the health care they desperately need.
Having said that, the coalition government's health policy should provide a lot of benefits to older Australians.
It has proposed, for example, a National Diabetes Strategy that will help people all over the country better manage this prevalent disease.
