Accommodation comparison site Hotels.com has released its rankings of the highest-rated hotels around the world, based on a database of 11 million genuine reviews written by guests.
According to the results, guests rated hotels in Boston and Washington, D.C. highest in the United States, while Monaco, French Polynesia and Turks and Caicos are the top three highest rated cities for their hotels internationally.
"Finding the right hotel can be the difference between an okay stay and an outstanding travel experience, and travelers can learn a lot from reading firsthand feedback of other guests," said Hotels.com travel expert Taylor Cole in a statement released June 25.
"Whether it's discovering helpful neighborhood insights or finding great value, travelers can leverage user-submitted guest reviews in a variety of ways to find the hotel that's the most obvious choice for them."
In the US, Las Vegas was the most popular city for travellers, but hotels in the area received an average overall guest rating of just 3.9. In contrast, both Washington, D.C. and Boston hotels scored 4.1 for average overall guest rating.
Guests also ranked Boston hotels highly for their general condition (4.2), service (4.2) and cleanliness (4.4).
Of all the hotels with an average guest rating of 4.0 and above, those in Portland were found to have the most affordable rates with an average of $126 per night. This was lower than the average of $190 for Boston and $156 for Washington, D.C.
Around the globe, guests reviewed hotels in Monaco and French Polynesia most favourably. Hotels in these countries received an average overall guest score of 4.4 and 4.3, respectively. The rest of the top five list was rounded out by Turks and Caicos, Slovenia and the Cayman Islands, all of which tied for an average guest rating of 4.2.
Next up on the list was New Zealand, whose hotels received an average score of 4.1. The Land of the Long White Cloud tied with several other countries including Ireland, Ecuador, Portugal, Austria and Bermuda.
