In the 12 months leading up to March 2013, those with Australian health insurance have received an astounding $15 billion worth of benefits.
A total of $11.16 billion paid for hospital benefits, while the remaining $3.77 billion went toward general treatment cover, according to Private Healthcare Australia.
Dr Michael Armitage, chief executive of Private Healthcare Australia, said these numbers disprove recent claims that private health insurance only covers around eight per cent of Australia's health care costs.
"The fact is that private health funds are restricted by legislation for paying for many services such as GP visits," Dr Armitage explained in a June 21 statement.
"In those areas where funds are able to pay, they are a major contributor to health care costs for Australians."
According to Dr Armitage, health insurance covered 51 per cent of all surgeries carried out between March 2012 and the same month this year.
In particular, it provided 55 per cent of those undergoing elective surgery with the funds to do so.
Out of the elective surgeries that were carried out in private hospitals during this period, 80 per cent were paid for by private health funds.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare's most recent hospital statistics report, titled Selected Episodes: Proportion Performed in Private Hospitals, also demonstrates that health insurance is helping Australians to get the medical treatments they need.
The following are just a few of the health care services that were performed in private hospitals all over the country in the past 12 months, and the percentage of these services paid for by private health funds.
• Knee procedures, 78 per cent
• Lens procedures, 71 per cent
• Hip replacements, 57 per cent
• Major joint replacements and limb reattachments, 64 per cent
• Mental health treatments, 81 per cent
• Cancer therapies, 60 per cent
Dr Armitage is worried that new government legislation will mean Australians are going to have to pay more to get private health cover.
